The Barber of Seville
In Seville, Figaro lends a hand to Count Almaviva, who is determined to win the hand of Rosina. To achieve their ends, the two accomplices devise a thousand tricks. Once they have seduced the beautiful girl, they must oust the elderly Doctor Bartolo, who jealously watches over his ward.
With The Barber of Seville, the young Gioacchino Rossini signs his seventeenth opera, composed in less than two weeks. This pinnacle of opera buffa propels us into the heart of a joyous collective hysteria. The fast-paced story abounds with delightful twists and turns.
First performed in Bern, Mariame Clément's production captures the work's irresistible frenzy. At the centre of the stage, a doll's house with a multitude of nooks and crannies is transformed at will, revealing the secrets of its inhabitants and visitors. And if you're allergic to the dentist's drill, beware, Bartolo is a dentist here!
To accompany the score's boisterous rhythm, conductor Sebastiano Rolli's enthusiasm is joined by the flamboyance and skill of a first-rate cast.
