The Stranger and the Shadows
In a village marked by war, Brodeck is ordered to write an account of a murder that everyone would rather forget as quickly as possible. As he pieces together the events, he finds himself drawn back to the figure of the Anderer, a mysterious outsider whose arrival shattered the fragile balance of an entire community.Based on Philippe Claudel’s novel, the opera by Daan Janssens explores less a criminal mystery than a collective landscape of fear, shame and wounded memory. In Fabrice Murgia’s production, the story unfolds in fragments, through exposed faces, sudden bursts of imagery and echoes of the past. The village becomes at once a place of judgment, a theatre of memory and a space haunted by all that refuses to disappear. What unfolds here is not simply a crime, but a human community confronted with the impossibility of escaping what it would rather leave unspoken.

Exploring further
Le Rapport de Brodeck (Manu Larcenet, 2016): A black-and-white adaptation of great visual power. This graphic novel is one of the key visual references that shaped the opera’s creation.
The White Ribbon (Michael Haneke, 2009): A village, silences, a pervasive violence that gradually permeates the entire community. A film that captures with great accuracy what Brodeck tell us about fear, the group and buried evil.
