Composed around 1830, Fanny Mendelssohn's (1805–1847) Overture in C major is a rare orchestral work in a catalogue dominated by piano and chamber music. Long overshadowed by her brother Felix, Fanny asserts her energy and rigorous sense of drama in this work, demonstrating her mastery of symphonic writing.

Composed in 1919, Rebecca Clarke's (1886–1979) Sonata for Viola and Piano is one of the jewels of the viola repertoire. This work of precocious maturity combines the intensity of post-Romantic language with impressionistic harmonies.

In the third part, Johannes Brahms' (1833-1897) Symphony No. 3 in F major, Op. 90 expresses, in a broad sweep between vital energy and renunciation, four movements developed around cyclical motifs, alternately heroic and elegiac, with a mysteriously peaceful, almost suspended finale.
